Jon Snow talks to The Oxford Student about the media in Darfur

Last Saturday Jon Snow talked to The Oxford Student about the humanitarian crisis in Darfur. The Channel Four New presenter was chairing a debate as part of the Hands up for Darfur Awareness Day organised by students at the Union. In an interview before the debate, Snow discussed the media's role in raising awareness of the crisis. He said, 'The problem is that there is almost no media presence at all in Darfur at the moment - we've just not been allowed access to the region. This must change - the situation in Darfur is the worst humanitarian crisis in the world and it is being neglected. I'm impressed by the students who've organised this event. It's a cause I'm passionate about.'

Students call for action over Darfur

The student charity organisation Hands up for Darfur is hosting a Darfur Awareness Day in Oxford this weekend. The event which is to be chaired by Channel 4 news presenter Jon Snow, aims to raise public awareness about the genocide in Darfur - now considered one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world. Lara Nassif, president of HUFD, said, "we felt students didn't really know what was going on in Darfur. I'd be asked questions like 'Who is Darfur?'" Sharon Stone and Ernst and Young are among the event's supporters. The HUFD group was set up by four Oxford students last September. With links to 15 other universities, the group hopes to raise £40,000. Last term ir raised over £2000 through a sponsored 'rowathon'.
