Hands up for Darfur has so far raised £25,000 for Kids for Kids, a local charity in Darfur that helps children to help themselves, supporting projects which are long lasting, self sustaining and community led.

Kids for Kids supports the sort of projects that people for a long time have said are the only lasting solutions to the problems in Africa: long term, self-sustainable projects, id

North Darfur, west Sudan, is totally isolated - hundreds of miles of bare lands, with virtually no infrastructure. Despite being three times the size of the United Kingdom, Darfur has been ignored by the world, until the terrible conflict which is currently tearing communities apart. Added to this, drought in recent years has taken its toll of crops and livestock alike. Malnourishment is a way of life for children in rural communities. Villagers, clinging to their homes, can only do so if they can be self sustainable. It is possible to help, despite the conflict - KIDS FOR KIDS projects, because they are run by the villagers themselves, are enabling families to stay in their homes.

The Kids for Kids Gift List gives an insight into the projects they are running in Darfur and how effectively their resources can be used:

1. Goats - a vital asset in Darfur. Their milk provides children with a vital source of nutrition and vitamins. The first kids born to the goats then pass to another family and another... £72 for six or £12 each

2. Midwife training - village based midwives help save the lives of women and children where there is little access to health care. £500 each

3. Donkeys - the mainstay of life in Darfur. Thye enable people to collect water, firewood and fodder: both to use and to sell - a critical source of income when crops have failed. "Without a donkey we cannot go home" - Amira, IDP camp at Abu Showk. £50 each

4. Water - is the first priority for people and animals. Children were walking up to 14 hours to collect water. By reducing that walking distance to less than one hour, Kids for Kids handpumps have enabled hundreds of children to go to school for the first time. £500 helps to provide clean water; £4000 one handpump.

5. Paravet training - keeping animals healthy is vital to safeguard the livelihoods of people who depend on them. £120 each.

6. Tree nurseries - help to slow desertification, replace trees cut for fuel and rebuild the houses destroyed in the conflict. They also provide a cash crop. £15 for 20 seedlings; £3000 each nursery.

7. Community training - ensures the longerm success of our projects and empowers women and children to manage the projects themseves. £60 per village per workshop
